On Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th August, our Year 3 Collaborative Learning Team celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy week with style.
On Literacy Day we met a complex character called Sunday Chutney, a book by Aaron Blabey. Our 3 classes read the story via both the book and a scanned version to ensure the large group could see the text and illustrations via the interactive whiteboard. The groups then split up and participated in 3 different activities related to the text; a Venn diagram, an acrostic poem and a character profile. These activities enabled the students to demonstrate the depth of their interpretation and understanding of the text. It was exciting to blend classes so the children had the opportunity to mix and mingle with old friends and, maybe, make some new ones too.
On Thursday we repeated this structure by rotating different groups across the 3 classrooms participating in Maths activities. In room 5 students and parents had the opportunity to explore Mary’s game and Mental Strategies such as ‘Build to 10’, ‘Doubles’ and ‘Near Doubles’. Room 7 had a fabulous time playing 2 different card games, Rowco and Combo. Rowco is a strategy game that requires planning, forward thinking and the knowledge of cause and effect; Combo is an operations game that requires diverse abilities using different operations to achieve the same total. Room 8 explored the wonders of Place Value via games involving up to 5 Place Value positions. The activities were planned to cater for the different levels of achievement within the group. All the games played have been created by a WA Mathematician called Dr Paul Swan.
The teachers and the students would like to thank all the fabulous Mums, Dads and siblings who came along to help us celebrate this state wide event. We had a huge amount of fun and hope that you enjoyed our open mornings.
